The Population of the world today is continuously growing and causing more complex economic problems which are magnified in the poverty-stricken state of millions of families worldwide. Indeed, the world is in critical state due to overpopulation.
In our country, one of the growing issues is about the use of preventive measures such as contraceptives which became the root of arguments between government and some religious sectors. There are religious leaders who do not quite see the urgency of the problem. They believed that artificial methods are violative of a divine mandate to "be fruitful and multiply". Despite their awareness of the widespread and severe economic difficulties as an effect of the growing population, they meet with hostility the family planning programs of many government and non-government sectors.
But is Family Planning indeed violative of God's Commandment?
Is God's mandate that man should "be fruitful and multiply" violated when couple decides the limit the number of children that they should have? NO. It is true that God ordered man to "be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth" ,but God went further to say "SUBDUE IT". In Gen. 1:28 , NKJV:
Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."
God did not just bid the first couple to be fruitful and multiply and to replenish the earth, but they were also bidden to responsibly subdue it. When man shall have multiply on earth to such a proportion that their population needs to be checked.then it must indeed be subdued or brought under control. So, controlling the growth of population by the use of such preventive measures is not against the will of God.
